Hey, we’ve jumped the hump – 184 days of 2012 gone and 182 to go!

Woo hoo!Better get that Christmas shopping under way…

Wal-Mart Shopper]

Yes, it was on this day in 1962 that the first Wal-Mart store opened in Rogers, Arkansas leading the way towards gratuitous photos of US bogans invading the internet… indeed a celebration of plumber’s crack, trackie-daks, bad tatts and very dubious cross-dressing…

July 2, 1900 saw the first airship patented by Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin flight take off from Lake Constance near Friedrichshafen in Germany (below). It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye – that eye was the Hindenburg disaster in 1937. The 35 deaths that day saw the end of the airship era.

To those born on July 2

Lindsay Lohan VibrantShe may well be an actress, may well be a model but she will always be known as Mick Jagger’s squeeze and mother of his four kids – American Jerry Hall turns 56 today. Australian author, Matthew Reilly, was born on this day in 1974 and turns 38. And Lindsay Lohan officially leaves adolescence today by turning 26. It has been a bumpy old ride since both of her starred in The Parent Trap. Of course she also did Freaky Friday and went on to make the sequels of being freaky on all other days that have a ‘y’ in them. I think most of us hope she feels like the photo on the inside but quietly wonder if she will do a Winehouse by age 27…

James Stewart Call Northside 777The deep voiced star of Car 54 Where Are You? and The Munsters, Fred Gwynne, died on this day in 1993 and James Stewart passed away in 1997, the day after a two movie co-star, Robert Mitchum.

Stewart was nominated for five Oscars, married once, and rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the air force with many commendations including two Distinguished Flying Crosses.

What you saw on the screen was what you got in real life – someone who wrote homespun poetry, enjoyed gardening and found a time and money for charities.

Photo for World UFO DayAnd finally, July 2 is World UFO Dayhttp://www.worldufoday.com/ – so, today, everyone point their phone cameras at the heavens in the hope of snapping something distant, out of focus and mysterious…

…Like the QF73 flight from BNE to LAX…

…Or a rogue helium balloon…

…Or an airship.
