On This Day, July 29

Welcome to Sunday.  Olympics are under way and we already have a Gold Medal from the girls in the 4×100 relay in the pool!  To quote the swimmers – “Woo-hoo!!!”

On this day in 1948 the previous London Summer Olympic Games opened after a 12 year hiatus caused by World War II – the Games prior to this were in Berlin with Chancellor Hitler ringside.

To today’s birthdays – a few Hollywood sex symbols popped up on this day… in 1885, Theda Bara, aka ‘The Vamp’, in 1905, Clara Bow aka ‘The It Girl’ (photo) and on the same day, Thelma Todd aka she was probably murdered aged 29 and shoved in her car with the exhaust on to make it look like suicide…”

And in 1925, Greek Composer, Mikis Theodorakis was born – he composed the wonderful Zorba the Greek music, which always makes you feel like dancing and winning olympic medals for nude wrestling.  Or is that just me?

American singer Mama Cass Elliot died on this day in 1974.  She officially died of a heart attack in Harry Nilsson’s London flat at 9 Curzon Place.  Four years later, The Who’s drummer, Keith Moon, died in the same flat at the same age, 32.

There is a myth that Cass choked on a ham sandwich, which gave rise to the thought that if Karen Carpenter had eaten Mama Cass’s sandwich they both might be alive today.

Back to the Olympics:

Aussies Christian Sprenger and Brenton Rickard swam well in the heats to go to the 100m Breaststroke final with 3rd and 4th fastest times, which is probably how they will finish in the final with the South African, Cameron Van Der Burgh, taking Gold.

The Men’s Cycling win went to 39yo Alexander Vinokourov from Kazakhstan. Am I the only one that thought it was a made up country in the game of Risk?

Nice moment. The camera crossing to the stands after the 4x100m relay to see a beaming, fit, 74yo Dawn Fraser. Dawn was part of the team to win gold in the same event at the 1956 Games in Melbourne! That winning time was 4.17.1 and today’s final was won in 3.33.15.

Shock moment! An Albanian weightlifter has been expelled from the games for taking steroids! What, only one…?
