Straight to those born on this day – In 1924, one of my favourite American Authors, James Baldwin…

In 1932, one of my favourite actors, Peter O’Toole – As well as being a terrific thespian he was as eccentric as all get out. I met someone who once cleaned house for him and she left his employ because she couldn’t handle his ‘ways’ – during the filming of Lawrence of Arabia he would dress in full Arabian gear and chase her around the house with sword drawn… and a friend’s niece in London came home once to find O’Toole visiting her father. She mentioned in passing that she was studying Hamlet at school and he put his arm around her shoulder and directed her to another room… “Ahhh m’dear, let me tell you the essence of my Hamlet…” What a great tutorial! With eight Oscar nominations he has the record for an actor most-nominated who never won. He picked up an honorary gong in 2003 for the volume of his work.

And Aussie swimmer, Susie O’Neill, turns 39 today… which segues nicely to…

Silver medals today to James Magnussen and the Women’s 4x200m relay in the pool and a Silver in the rowing.
