On This Day, August 9

Happy Friday… Thought for the day… I read somewhere that sex is the best way to both exercise and lose weight… I really don’t understand how 2 minutes and 15 seconds every six months will do the job…

On this day in 1930, Betty Boop made her cartoon debut in Dizzie Dishes.

In 1936, Jesse Owens won  his fourth Gold becoming the first American to win four medals in one Olympic Games.

In 1974, thanks to the Watergate scandal, Richard Nixon declared, “I am Not A Crook” and then owned up to bring a crook and resigned.

To those born on this day…

In 1938 Australian tennis player, Rod ‘Rocket’ Laver.  Name-dropping a little bit here because Laver was once my personal trainer at tennis.

Back in the non-professional money-making days of tennis, top players toured the country giving lessons to kiddies.  Laver came to my home town of Gundagai and taught me, in one lesson, the fundamentals of forehand, backhand and serving… and from that day I was a more than adequate social player.

In 1943, American boxer, Ken Norton was born – no brush with fame there – and in 1963, the late Whitney Houston was born.  My one-step-removed-brush there – I did a gig with her cousin, Dionne Warwick once… we had a ciggie and a chat backstage.  Ahhh memories…
