Weekend What’s On – Joe Bonamassa

I’ll kick off with a bit of naivety and name-dropping. A couple of years ago I was e-chatting with an old school mate, Rick Mellick, and I inquired to what he was doing. Turns out he pretty much tours the world playing keyboard in Joe Bonamassa’s band, taking time out occasionally to record a new album in places like the Greek island of Santorini.

I hadn’t heard of Joe at that time so I went Googling. The first You Tube clip I found was Joe, live from a packed Albert Hall in London, with a Mr Eric Clapton turning up as guest guitarist. ‘Hello’ I thought, ‘this is a serious muso’! I am now a huge fan – Joe is a brilliant blues/rock guitarist and sometimes I can hear a 2012 incarnation of Cream.

Joe and his band toured Australia last year to increase awareness and build a larger fan base and he is back this October playing bigger venues. Dammit, I will be away – I would have loved to catch Joe live and have a couple of glasses of lunch with Ricardo, but them’s the breaks.

Concert dates and venues: Perth, Concert Hall, October 1; Brisbane, QPAC, October 3; Sydney, State Theatre, October 5; Adelaide, Her Majesty’s Theatre, October 9; Melbourne, Palais Theatre, October 11.
