AJ Hackett Bungy Cairns

Got to sample Australia’s one & only bungy last weekend – AJ Hackett in Cairns.  Well, I didn’t sample it, I let my 16yo daughter climb the 196 steps to the man-made platform perched 50m (164 feet) above the wee pond.

It is a slick little operation with an energetic, welcoming team and a very cool vibe.  Music pumps, the big screen videos are showing the thrills, there is a licensed bar and there are pheromones in the air.

It is certainly an adrenalin-packed experience but totally safe – as one of the team, Wayne, said, it is about selling the illusion of danger.  While not as dangerous, the thought of bungy is somewhere up there with karaoke for Yours Truly – and that ain’t going to happen!

I met a guy with the appropriate name of Ian Chill.  Ian is the Access & Equity Project Officer with Cairns Regional Council and he (with wheelchair) has done six bungy jumps – the last one with a perfect backflip (photo right).  Some conditions apply for wheelchair bungy.

For an additional five dollars, jumpers can hire a costume – Spiderman, Batman, cow suit etc.  I have to say that the guy in the lime green Borat mankini did absolutely nothing for me.  If there had been horses present, they would have been frightened.

And congrats to all concerned for just taking out the 2012 Golden Backpacks Award for Best Activity in Queensland (second year in a row). http://cairns.ajhackett.com/
