On This Day

NOTE:  ON THIS DAY IS IN RECESS WHILE THE DAILY TRAVEL DIARY POSTS ARE HAPPENING.

Rather than explain what On This Day is about, here is a sample for June 1, 2012…

Welcome to Friday! At least the week is right end up…

On this day in 1533, Anne Boleyn was crowned Queen of England in Westminster Abbey…

Anne was pregnant at the time to Henry VIII, presumably with a son and heir… In September she gave birth to a girl, which was second prize.

Early in 1536 she had another shot in the locker room but that ended in a miscarriage and tears before bedtime because it, in part, led to her execution in May that year.

History’s rumour is that Anne had one too many fingers on one hand and one too many breasts on her chest – but she was probably the prettiest of Henry’s wives.

Speaking of the Royal Family…

On this day in 1943 a British Overseas Airways Corporation flight was shot down by the Germans, killing actor Leslie Howard (who may have been an anti-Nazi spy)…

Howard was Ashley Wilkes in Gone with the Wind and mates with Humphrey Bogart, who called his daughter (b 1952) Leslie Howard Bogart.

Known as a ‘ladies’ man’ he once said that he “didn’t chase women but … couldn’t always be bothered to run away…”

To today’s birthdays…

Born on this day in 1937, American actor and mellow voiceover man, Morgan Freeman and Aussie author, Colleen McCullough. We’ve all had books you just can’t put down, but her Thorn Birds had so many pages you just couldn’t pick it up. The very funny “nigger” sheriff in Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles, Cleavon Little, was born on this day in 1939 (he died in 1992).

Born on this day in 1947, Ronnie Wood – the Rolling Stones guitarist from 1964 to the present, artist and sometimes wild lad. Ronnie once limited himself to a daily duty free allowance of a litre of spirits and 50 cigarettes with a side order of cocaine. He’s still rocking at 65 and apparently dating a 30 year old Brazilian model. He left his (much younger) second wife, Jo, in 2008 for a bint called Ekaterina Ivanova, who was somewhere between 18 and 21.  A rolling stone gathers no sense…

Turning 44 today is actor, singer and one-time substance abuser, Jason Donovan. I have had the pleasure of interviewing him twice and all I can say is, he is a lovely, lovely guy who probably found fame a bit complicated.

Born on this day in 1974, Canadian singer Alanis Morissette, who came out with of one of the most irritating songs ever – Ironic – the song is about bad luck, not irony! It is not ironic to have rain on your weather day unless you marry a bloody weather man…as for a black fly in your chardonnay… that’s also bad luck… or roughage.

Here are my Friday Footy Tips:

Cowboys to beat Titans in a close one…

Sea Eagles over Dragons…

Tigers to beat Raiders… Rabbitohs over Bulldogs…

Storm easily over Warriors even though it is in Auckland…

Broncos also easily over Knights…

Eels will go down to the Sharks and Panthers and Roosters both get a bye.

Leave you with this this thought…

Have a great weekend and don’t fall over too much!
